My child doesn't like vegetables

During our Healthy Lifestyles Week we introduced the children to cruditee at lunchtime. The kitchen staff very kindly agreed to cut different fruit and vegetables into small strips. These were placed in plastic bowls in the middle of each table. Welfare staff encouraged the children to try something different and explore the new tastes. As well as enjoying the novelty - chomping on raw vegetables kept the children occupied whilst waiting for their turn to be served. The idea has now been continued on a monthly basis.


Sit down and eat your dinner

Does this sound familiar? Children rushing their school meal, others leaving their packed lunch untouched, children swapping from school dinners to packed lunch because they don't have to queue. Why? Because they are desperate to get out to play. Parents complain, children are hungry and can't concentrate, have stomach ache, indigestion or feel sick. Answer: Everybody is expected to sit at the table for 20 minutes and may not leave before, even if they have finished. Result: Clean plates, empty boxes, increased social interaction and happy parents. Problem solved!!!

School Hug

This activity brought everyone together - literally, enhancing personal and social development with teamwork and co-operation. The pupils and staff embraced the school in a human hug to show that the school belongs to all of us and to show that we all work together and look after each other. An added bonus to this display of affection was to match the length of the hug with an equal length of coins. Assuming the average stretch was 1 metre, we asked each child to collect and bring to school 1 metre of coins (any value). Money raised was for Science equipment and RE resources for school. Not only were we showing our commitment to the school but we were also helping to enhance our learning by adding to our resources.

Adopt a Pot

Our school playground areas feature many planters full of plants and flowers. To achieve this we introduced an "Adopt a Pot" scheme. Children are given the opportunity of adopting a pot, promising to keep it flourishing with plants and flowers for a full year. They are in charge of planting, watering and tending their planters so giving them a sense of responsibility and pride in their school.


Fun in the Sun

Each Summer Term one class assembly focuses on Sun Safety. This year Years 3 and 4 performed a play called Fun in the Sun. This play is from a Sun Safety Pack produced by Cancer Research UK. As well as giving the fun safety message to a wider audience the play was an important element in our Literacy lessons.
