Tuesday 4th September 2018

Dear Parents/Carers,

Firstly I would like to begin by welcoming you to Aquila Class otherwise known as Year 5. I hope you have had a lovely time over the summer break and I am sure you are now ready and excited to start the new school year!

Classroom Staff

Class Teacher: Mr N. Jones

Teaching Assistant: Mrs G. Stone

PPA Teaching: Mrs H. Twigg and Mrs D. Taylor

Timetable

I have attached a timetable to this letter so please feel free to have a browse and again if you have any concerns please let me know.

Homework

The children will receive homework on a Friday. They will continue to get an A4 sheet, double sided of maths and English. I would ask that the children attempt the homework independently but please support if needed. They should spend no more than 30/45 minutes on the whole worksheet.

Topic

Throughout the first half term our topic will be “Blitz and Pieces.” We will be looking at WW2 (see attached sheet).

General Reminders…

  • Any letters or reply slips, which need to be returned, can be put in your child’s school bag. The children are encouraged to check them each morning and give things in before the register.
  • The children will have access to a class set of cups, for water, throughout the day however if they wish to have their own water bottle to keep in class which they can access throughout the day they are welcome. Please make sure your child’s name is written clearly on their water bottle.
  • School starts at 8:55am. Please ensure the children are in by then as they will have an opportunity to complete maths, reading, times tables and SPAG activities before registration.
  • At the end of the school day (3:15pm) the children will wait in the area inside the gate. They may not leave until they see who is collecting them, and strictly must not leave through the gate until they do so.

Reading

Your child will continue to be given reading book either from the school library or from the reading schemes. They will also be given a reading diary to bring home and fill in to document their reading both at school and at home. These will be checked throughout the week. You should aim to read every night if possible as reading is vital to the whole curriculum.

Spellings

Your child will continue to have spellings twice a week appropriate to their current ability. One of these sessions will be on words learnt at home. Your support in helping the children learn these rules will be greatly appreciated and will ultimately improve their writing and prepare them for future years. During the year they will also receive common words to learn.

English

The children will be learning about Stories with Historical Settings and our class novel will be ‘Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll. We will also be looking at ‘Boy’ by Roald Dahl as we approach Roald Dahl day.

Maths

Throughout the term the children will be working on a range of mathematical concepts including number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. If you could support them as much as possible to learn their times tables and corresponding divisions by practising at home I believe the children can continue to achieve great things this year.

PE

The children will be doing PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please ensure your child has their PE kit (white t-shirt, shorts, plain tracksuit bottoms, pumps and trainers) in school and that all items are clearly labelled.

Winmarleigh (PGL)

We will be going to Winmarleigh between 13th – 15th March 2019. Please keep an eye out for the letter and information coming soon. If you have any concerns about this please come and see me asap.

I would again like to thank you in advance for all your support this year and if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me on ClassDojo or come in and see me, I look forward to seeing you all at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ event on Tuesday 18th September 2018.
