This year we will be studying the following five topics:
Autumn 1: Blitz and Pieces
Autumn 2: Once Upon a Time
Spring 1: Ancient Greece
Spring 2: Local News
Summer: Shiver me Timbers!
Maths and English Targets
The Year 5 children have maths and English targets (which are at the back of their relevant books). Please ask your child their current targets as they should know them.
The children will receive homework on a Friday. They will continue to get an A4 sheet, double sided of maths and English. I would ask that the children attempt the homework independently but please support if needed. They should spend no more than 30/45 minutes on the whole worksheet.
Reading Books / Library Books
Your child will continue to be given reading book either from the school library or from the reading schemes. They will also be given a reading diary to bring home and fill in to document their reading both at school and at home. These will be checked throughout the week. You should aim to read every night if possible as reading is vital to the whole curriculum.
Reading, Writing, Reflection and Design Areas:
We have a dedicated reading area in class. The reading area has a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books. The children will also use the library in school and may take a library book home each week.
There is a writing area for two children to work at for extra work on things such as sentence structure, handwriting and SPAG.
We have a reflection area where the children are allowed to spend time reflecting upon anything that has happened in class or at home that week.
We have also recently added an art and design table for the children to use to sketch, paint and build.
Before and After School
At the beginning of the school day, before registration (8.40 – 8.55) the children will have different maths, reading and writing activities to complete throughout the year. During our first half term we will have a push on times tables, the children will be able to play games and activities to improve their times tables fluency.
At the end of each school day (3.15 pm) the children will wait in the area outside the top of the KS1 corridor (with all of the other KS2 children). The children will wait in this area until they see who is collecting them, and strictly must not leave through the gate until they do so.
The children will be doing PE twice a week. Please ensure that your child has their PE kit (white t-shirt, shorts, plain tracksuit bottoms, pumps and trainers) in school at all times (and all clearly labelled).
The children may also bring in their own water bottles from in from home, but please make sure that they are labelled also.
We will be going to Winmarleigh between 13th – 15th March 2019. If you have any concerns about this please come and see me asap.
I would again like to thank you in advance for all your support this year and if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me on ClassDojo or come in and see me.
Thank you for visiting our class page,
Miss S. Hardy
