Welcome to Year 5!

Firstly I would like to begin by welcoming you to Aquila Class.I hope that you all had a lovely break and I am sure you are now ready and excited to start a new half term together.

As we are starting a new term in Lockdown, our topics will be changing every week! This could be focused on RE, Science, Geography or something exciting that is happening during that week.

Staff in Aquila Class

Class Teacher: Miss S. Hardy

Teaching Assistant: Mrs G. Stone

PPA Teaching: Mrs H. Twigg and Mrs D. Taylor

*We are always looking for parent  / grandparent volunteers to help with reading and classroom jobs, even a couple of hours a week is a huge help, with the promise of tea, coffee and biscuits!  Please contact if you are interested in helping us in class.*

Our Topics

This year we will be studying the following five topics:

Autumn 1: The Shang Dynasty

Autumn 2: Beyond the Earth

Spring 1: Vicious Vikings!

Spring 2: Amazon Adventures

Summer: We will be focusing on lots of different topic during the summer terms.

As we are currently in Lockdown, daily learning is being sent home on Dojo. This consists of Maths and English work daily and a list of Topic activities weekly. The topic will change weekly. We may have an RE focus, a Science focus or anything else from our curriculum or even something exciting that is happening during that week.

Maths and English Targets

The Year 5 children have maths and English targets (which are at the back of their relevant books).  Please ask your child their current targets as they should know them.

The children will receive homework on the first day of half term due in the last day of the half term. This will have a selection of different homework topics for the children to complete when they like. They will also receive English and Math homework when we have completed a significant topic. I would ask that the children attempt the homework independently but please support if needed.

Reading Books / Library Books

Your child will continue to be given reading book either from the school library or from the reading schemes. They will also be given a reading diary to bring home and fill in to document their reading both at school and at home. These will be checked throughout the week. You should aim to read every night if possible as reading is vital to the whole curriculum.

Reading, Writing, Reflection and Design Areas:

We have a dedicated reading area in class.  The reading area has a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books.  The children will also use the library in school and may take a library book home each week.

There is a writing area for two children to work at for extra work on things such as sentence structure, handwriting and SPAG.

We have a reflection area where the children are allowed to spend time reflecting upon anything that has happened in class or at home that week.

We have also recently added an art and design table for the children to use to sketch, paint and build.

Before and After School

At the beginning of the school day, before registration (8.40 – 8.55) the children will have different maths, reading and writing activities to complete throughout the year. During our first half term we will have a push on times tables, the children will be able to play games and activities to improve their times tables fluency.

At the end of each school day (3.15 pm) the children will wait in the area outside the top of the KS1 corridor (with all of the other KS2 children).  The children will wait in this area until they see who is collecting them, and strictly must not leave through the gate until they do so.

General Reminders

The children will be doing PE twice a week.  Please ensure that your child has their PE kit (white t-shirt, shorts, plain tracksuit bottoms, pumps and trainers) in school at all times (and all clearly labelled).

The children may also bring in their own water bottles from in from home, but please make sure that they are labelled also.

I would again like to thank you in advance for all your support this year and if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me on ClassDojo or come in and see me.

Thank you for visiting our class page,

Miss S. Hardy
